Opp: The Scottish Arts Club Charitable Trust - £500 Isobel Lodge Award for New Scottish Writing

The Isobel Lodge Award is a special annual prize of £500 for unpublished writers over 18 years who enter the Scottish Arts Club Short Story Competition and were either born in Scotland, have their primary residence in Scotland or were studying in Scotland during the year of entry to the competition. "Unpublished" means that the writer has never had a book-length work of fiction or short fictional story purchased by a commercial publisher or magazine. Writers may still qualify for the Isobel Lodge New Scottish Writer Award if they have self-published a work of fiction. Authors of commercially published non-fiction may also submit stories for the Isobel Lodge Award. The entry form for the Scottish Arts Club Short Story Competition asks all entrants if they would like to be considered for the Isobel Lodge New Scottish Writing Award. Stories may be entered in both competitions simultaneously at no additional cost. The entry fee for the overall competition is £10 per story. In theory it is possible for one excellent story by an unpublished writer to win both the main Scottish Arts Club Short Story Competition prize of £800 and the Isobel Lodge Award of £500. As with the main competition, stories entered for the Isobel Lodge Award may be on any topic and should be 1500 words or less. Writers may enter as many stories as they wish. The selection of the story winning the Isobel Lodge Award will be by a panel of experienced readers along with Trustees of the Isobel Lodge Memorial Fund. Read Isobel's story www.sacctrust.org/isobel Stories short-listed for the Isobel Lodge Award will be published on the Scottish Arts Club Charitable Trust website in August 2017. Finalists for the Isobel Lodge Award will be invited to attend the Short Story Awards dinner to be held at the club on Saturday 14 October 2017, when the winner will be presented with £500. At the same event the overall winner of the short story competition will be announced. The Scottish Arts Club, located in Rutland Square, Edinburgh, has been in operation for more than 140 years. It provides members with a lively programme of talks, recitals, exhibitions and includes a great restaurant. The Club also has an active Writer’s Group. New members/visitors welcome.
