Opp: Participatory research – community mapping

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) is seeking quotes for a multi-community participatory mapping exercise relating to Edinburgh’s coastline. Edinburgh Shoreline is an exploration of the city’s 27km coastline. It is celebrating the long relationship between people and the sea and uncovering the rich plant and animal life that survives or thrives on the shoreline. It is also looking at the challenges that the coastal zone faces from piecemeal development to sea level change. With the active involvement of local communities from Queensferry to Joppa, the highlight of the project will be an exhibition at the John Hope Gateway, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from 28 July-23 September 2018. Its impact will be longer term however; by equipping communities to conserve and celebrate the shoreline’s rich history and biodiversity and to encourage visits from locals and tourists. The exercise will involve a maximum 6 or 7 diverse groups who represent localities along the Edinburgh shoreline. Its aim is to develop engagement with their own stretch of the coast, identify special places, problems, access issues and opportunities. While the maps may be done in a variety of ways, the output from each exercise should be in a form that can be displayed during the exhibition and the information from all the exercises be able to be used to create a joined-up community coast map. The maps will be part of the project legacy. The exercise should be conducted over June and July with the finished maps being available for display in an exhibition opening 28 July. The appointee(s) will take direction from the Shoreline Project Manager and steering group. The project team will provide guidance on main areas of focus during the project. If needed, members of the team can also provide facilitation during workshops. The maximum budget for this exercise is £5000, excluding VAT, so quotes should not exceed this figure. A payment schedule will be arranged between the Project Manager and the appointed person. Quotes should include: a covering letter, links to examples of relevant previous work and a budgeted timeline for delivery. Quotes should be received by 1 June 2018, no later than noon.
