Opp: Finding the Moment with Mervyn Millar

A three-day practical workshop for puppeteers and performers with an interest in ensemble playing, developing connections and emotional puppetry. Puppets that do nothing. Puppets that just look. Puppets that have feelings. Scenes between puppets often hinge on an elusive moment when subtlety, stillness and detail create meaning. We'll use a series of impossible (or at least ill-advised) challenges and a process of improvisation, development and refinement to explore these moments and understand how puppeteers can work together to focus them for an audience. A three-day practical workshop for puppeteers and performers with an interest in ensemble playing, developing connections and emotional puppetry. Mervyn Millar (Significant Object) designs and directs puppets in theatre. He was part of the original creative team for 'War Horse', in which he performed, and directed puppetry in London, New York, Toronto and Berlin. Other credits include 'Circus 1903' (international tour), 'Crow' (Handspring UK), 'Stiller' (Resident Munich), 'James II' (NTS), 'Die Brüder Löwenherz' and 'Peter Pan' (Schauspielhaus Zürich). His books on puppetry include 'Journey of the Tall Horse', 'The Horse's Mouth', and the forthcoming 'Puppetry: How to Do It'. Puppet Animation Scotland champions puppetry, visual theatre and animated film in Scotland and internationally. Through our portfolio of festivals and support schemes we provide the practical means to foster creativity, innovation and excellence throughout Scotland's professional theatre community. We also offer a range of skills and career development opportunities to encourage would-be practitioners to prepare for entry into the sector. Location: Glasgow

Opp: Creating Your Universe with Sabine Molenaar

An intensive workshop for more experienced dancers, exploring the different improvisatory and compositional tools Sabine Molenaar uses in her own creative process. How to build your own universe? What personal qualities and layers might create a total experience? How might you tell your story through movement which starts purely from an emotion, a thought or a physical sensation? Using visualisation, breath and movement to connect the mind and body, we will stimulate the imagination, creating a nourishing environment to research different states of mind and physicality. This workshop will stimulate each participant to find their own unique qualities and, through pushing their physical boundaries, transform both body and mind. This workshop will take place at Dance Space Edinburgh on Friday 8th from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday 9th from 1pm to 8pm. With her company Sandman, Sabine Molenaarcreates deeply personal imaginative productions ruled by the associative logic of dreams. The world she creates is intriguing and unusual but always recognizable. Sabine develops her work from a specific state of mind. The body - in which she combines supreme mental, physical and emotional concentration - is her tool and gives her characters and associations profundity and expressiveness. She connects the concrete and the etheric. The body is the point of departure and compassion: painfully virtuous and mercilessly personal. Puppet Animation Scotland champions puppetry, visual theatre and animated film in Scotland and internationally. Through our portfolio of festivals and support schemes we provide the practical means to foster creativity, innovation and excellence throughout Scotland's professional theatre community.
