After working as a graphic designer for many years I retrained in 2013, gaining a Masters in Fashion and Textiles from Heriot Watt University where I received a bursary from Creative Scotland for my project on Letterforms and Textiles. Since then I have been working as a freelance surface pattern/ print designer and have shown my work at Premiere Vision Paris, Print-Source New York and Heimtextil Frankfurt. Currently, I’m preparing work for this year’s Heimtextil, taking place 9- 12th January in Frankfurt. My work will be represented by my Australian agent, Nerida Hansen Print and Textiles. I am one of 15 international designers taking part in this global show but I am the only designer based in Scotland who is exhibiting. I have eight collections which cover 40 textile designs; these are grouped in mini capsule collections of five prints per collection. The designs are suitable for a wide range of textile uses from lampshades to upholstery, bedding, cushions, rugs and even package design. I also have 36 designs ready for the bedding market which are grouped in collections of three prints per collection. I am also part of another textile collective called Finch and Foxglove which comprises of nine global independent designers and illustrators. As part of this I will be showing textiles, surface pattern and stationery work with them at a show called Blue Print in San Francisco in October 2018. I have a teaching qualification and recently this year I had the pleasure of doing some maternity cover at Heriot Watt University in the textile department - working on Industry Briefs from Old Navy, California and Hallmark UK with the students. This was very interesting and I would love to be involved more in freelance teaching and creative development work and mentoring as I benefitted myself greatly from excellent mentoring through a scheme set up by Creative Edinburgh. I would also like to work in collaboration with interior designers, builders and hotels on joint textile projects as surface pattern can be applied to a wide number of exterior and interior projects. I am currently working on a special textile project with a client in Edinburgh based on custom designed wallpaper and textiles and this is an area of my work which I would love to develop in Scotland going forward, one day seeing my textiles in people’s homes.
