Interview: Emily Millichip, Fashion Designer

What inspires you?
Free thinkers, the 1950s, trailer parks, red wine, Mars, eating blue cheese just before bed.

Your use of social media is brilliant. Has sharing your work and connecting with others online benefited your business? If so, how
If used properly it is very motivating. It is great to be able to put a new piece of work up on Instagram or Facebook and immediately see the response. I tend to approach it more like blogging, so I always like to have beautiful images and tell a story. I have also found an amazing creative support network online, and it is great to see all of these independent designers/makers/artists doing inspiring stuff all over the world. This is much more relevant and interesting to me than fashion magazines.

What makes Edinburgh a good city to be based?
It is beautiful, small enough to cycle around, and the creative community is small enough to be more supportive rather than super competitive.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering going freelance?
Give up your day job.
