Roddy McRae, Retina The Scottish International Photography Festival

Can you tell us about yourself and your creative background?

My passion for photography began as a teenager at the school photography club. Since then I have predominantly worked in the print and media industry involved in magazine, book and packaging and latterly running picture agencies selling images to newspapers, magazines and creative businesses.

What does your role involve with Retina?

I am the current Chairman of Retina and principally look after sponsorship and marketing activities as well a chairing our regular meetings throughout the year. We have a great committee with a really good mix of skills and knowledge that all contribute to the success of tour annual festival and not to forget our volunteers with whom we cannot operate.

Can you give us an insight in to what's happening with the programme this year?

A key message is that it is all free. Our 2015 brochure and website provide an in depth answer. Put simply, we are blending international and Scottish photography with our key underlying objective of supporting and encouraging emerging talent based in Scotland.

What makes Edinburgh a good city to be based?

The city's unique beauty and character is the key for me personally

What advice would you give to people thinking of pursuing a career in the creative industries, or more specifically, in photography?

My advice is to go for it, if that is your real passion. You must be realistic in your expectations and most importantly for me persevere against the barriers that you may encounter. Photography is extremely competitive, however if you can create strong imagery that people and clients can relate you will be successful.
