Business Spotlight: Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce

17 July 2024

What is the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and what do you do?

The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic, independent membership organisation dedicated to supporting over 850 businesses in Edinburgh. We create valuable connections and offer a wide range of practical services and benefits, designed to support business growth. Each year, we host more than 100 vibrant networking events, provide a range of marketing opportunities and offer support to internationalise. We advocate passionately for our members' interests with policymakers at both city and national levels. We’re proud to work with organisations of all sizes and sectors, from innovative one-person startups to established multinational corporations, ensuring every member can thrive in our diverse business community.

Creative minds and corporate powerhouses can operate in their own worlds. How can the Chamber of Commerce create bridges between these two dynamic industries?

At the Chamber, we champion collaboration across all sectors. The potential benefits of cross-sectoral knowledge exchange are huge - it can often lead to the discovery of more innovative solutions to challenges by incorporating diverse inputs and viewpoints.

We believe that differences in views isn’t a bad thing. It can challenge our preconceived notions, push us out of our comfort zones, and inspire us to think outside the box. This diversity of thought can spark creativity and innovation, leading to new solutions and strategies.

We take pride in our cross-sectoral approach, which allows us to bring together a variety of businesses from over 28 industries. This includes the creative sector and corporate or professional services firms. Our role is to facilitate dialogue and opportunities to connect, over our shared (or maybe sometimes differing!), ideas.

We know it's easier said than done, but getting involved with your local business community is one of the best ways to break into the corporate scene.

As champions of business growth and success, can you share some inspiring success stories where membership with the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce propelled creative businesses to new heights.

We would never say that we are the reason that businesses in the creative space can be propelled to new heights but we certainly give them the tools to do this themselves. From winning at our annual business awards to raising their profile in the local business community, creative businesses especially in the marketing and digital space have really thrived within the membership and continued to foster excellent connections within the community.

What do you think people love most about your fantastic networking events?

People love the diversity of our networking events, which is something we frequently receive positive feedback on. With members from all sectors, we can showcase the best that Edinburgh has to offer and provide exclusive opportunities they can’t find anywhere else. While our networking lunches and breakfasts are popular, our more unique events truly stand out.

For instance, at Christmas, we hosted a morning session at Edinburgh Zoo, where attendees made Christmas presents for the meerkats and monkeys, and we networked behind the news table at STV studios with our friends at the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, our bi-monthly Rising Star events offer our younger chamber members a chance to connect through fun activities, fostering relaxed conversations and easing the pressure of networking.

What are your top tips for creatives and freelancers eager to break into the corporate scene and make meaningful connections?

Get involved! We know it's easier said than done, but getting involved with your local business community is one of the best ways to break into the corporate scene.

Several of our members who have attended our events have made connections that have helped them land projects with other members. Our speed networking events are a prime example of how that can work, as you get the opportunity to speak to everyone in the room, and get to deliver elevator pitch, giving you the opportunity to showcase your skills.
