Creative Edinburgh x Refugee Festival Scotland

10 June 2024

Refugee Festival Scotland is an annual celebration of creativity, culture and community, and we couldn’t be more proud that Creative Edinburgh is part of the festival programme this year. The festival is run by the Scottish Refugee Council, Scotland’s national refugee charity that supports thousands of men, women and children every year as they rebuild their lives in Scotland. They provide direct support and advice services, promote community integration, stand up for refugee rights and campaign for a fairer, more humane asylum system.

The Scottish Refugee Council believe that everyone seeking safety should receive the same warm welcome and respect, no matter where they’re from or how they arrived. The Festival creates opportunities for people to meet and get to know each other, sampling each other’s cultures and discovering commonalities. By building bridges across communities, the festival offers a vision of hope, friendship, neighbourliness, and solidarity with people seeking refugee protection in Scotland.

And here at Creative Edinburgh, we believe in the power of art and storytelling to foster understanding and empathy. By participating in the Festival, we want to highlight and celebrate the diverse experiences and creative talents of refugees and asylum seekers who have made Scotland their home. As a community, it’s crucial for us to continue amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities to acknowledge their contributions and shed light on the challenges they face. By providing a platform for displaced artists to share their work and stories, we challenge stereotypes, build connections, and hope to inspire others. For these reasons, it felt important to align with the Festival this year and be proactive in our participation.

On Tuesday 18 June, we are hosting a very special edition of our monthly Creative Circles meetup: Celebrating Scotland’s Multicultural Heritage. When coming to a new country, refugees and asylum seekers encounter cultural barriers, language obstacles, and societal prejudices. With this event, we aim to bring these issues to the forefront, fostering a deeper understanding of these experiences and promoting a more inclusive society.

We'll hear from three inspiring artists:  Razan Madhoon, Alena Rogozhkina and Olga Niekrasova.
