Making Tax Digital / Tax Webinar
Otis Tax
If you're a freelance creative earning over £30,000 a year, there's a significant change coming to how you report your income to HMRC. It's called Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and depending on your turnover, it affects you between April 2026 and April 2028. We are running a free online workshop to explain what this means in practice – especially for creative businesses where income is irregular and "quarterly reporting" sounds like it was designed for someone else's work. What's changing Instead of one annual Self Assessment return, you'll keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software. Your actual tax bill doesn't change – you still pay by 31 January – but the reporting rhythm shifts. The timeline: April 2026: applies if your gross income exceeds £50,000 April 2027: threshold drops to £30,000 April 2028: expected to drop to £20,000 This is based on gross income (turnover before expenses), not profit. So if you invoice £35,000 but your profit is £18,000, you're within scope from April 2027. What we'll cover How quarterly updates actually work and what information you'll submit Software options that integrate with HMRC, including free and low-cost tools Managing irregular income within a quarterly reporting system Common creative expenses: studio space, equipment, materials, professional development The cash basis versus traditional accounting (and why the default might work better) The year-one penalty waiver and what HMRC expects during transition Why this might be useful Most creative freelancers I speak with haven't heard about Making Tax Digital yet, or assume it's for larger businesses. It's not – it's specifically aimed at sole traders, which includes most creative freelancers. Once you understand what's required, it's manageable. The quarterly rhythm can actually help you track finances better throughout the year. But the transition needs planning, particularly around software and establishing new habits. This workshop simply demystifies the process, with clear information about what's changing and what your options are.

Bespoke SME support packages
Genoa Black
Genoa Black is a business consultancy and marketing agency supporting SMEs across Scotland and internationally. For over 12 years, we have designed and delivered growth-focused programmes including Marketing Expert Support, Digital Boost, the International Selling Programme, Lanarkshire Business Gateway Business Support, and the Glasgow Business Growth Framework. To date, we have delivered 1,000+ consultancy assignments for Scottish SMEs and continue to work closely with both public-sector organisations and private clients. We operate across a wide range of sectors, including life sciences, energy, renewables, manufacturing, technology, professional services, education, hospitality, and more, giving us a detailed understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Scottish SMEs. Over the past few years, we have seen a significant reduction in funded support available to SMEs. While provision has narrowed to largely generic educational offerings, the demand for specialised, tailored support has grown, particularly given current economic pressures and an increasingly complex political landscape. We believe this has created a clear gap in the ecosystem, one that needs flexible, expert support that can adapt to fast-growing and high-potential businesses, such as as start-ups, spin-outs and scale-ups. If you are interested in this for your organisation, please click on the link below to find out more about our bespoke packages. We would also be delighted to present our offering in more detail or develop more tailored packages aligned to your organisation’s needs.
